Why Buy Existing Websites?

To make money:  For the technically savvy, I don't know of a better investment than purchasing an existing website. In the current market they can be bought for 10 to 12 times monthly NET earnings. That's a 120% annual rate of return and I don't see how it can last. Once more buyers are comfortable with the concept, the yield will have to drop.

To jumpstart your online activity: It takes time to set up a website, get links from other sites, and be indexed by the search engines.  In addition, search engines have ageing filters (the sandbox) that discount the value of new sites in favor of ones that have been available longer.  You can give yourself a significant headstart by buying a site which is similiar to what you want to build and adding to it.

This website deals primarily with evaluating websites and/or domains for possible purchase and includes my thoughts on their development into profitable projects before I bought them, and how things have actually turned out. Website Investors is where I discuss website business strategy, holding companies, asset protection, and business structure for investors looking to buy and hold websites in their investment portfolios.

For the novice finding a good website to buy is not easy. Lots of folks have figured out they can make good money by putting some scraped (stolen) content onto a free template, and selling it as unique content on a custom design. If they aren't in a big hurry they will buy some links and get the site ranked by the search engines before selling. Lots of these get sold and lots of buyers get disappointed.
